About Spinal Decompression At Willow Bend Chiropractic
Lower back pain and sciatica are among the most common musculoskeletal conditions affecting daily life — and for many, finding an effective, non-surgical solution is a priority.
Spinal decompression therapy is a non-invasive option worth exploring for those seeking alternatives to surgery for back pain and related symptoms.
Spinal decompression works by gently stretching the spine, which changes the force and position along the spinal column. This process reduces pressure on the spinal discs — the gel-like cushions between the vertebrae — by creating negative pressure within the disc. As a result, bulging or herniated discs may retract, which can reduce pressure on surrounding nerves and spinal structures.

At Willow Bend Chiropractic, spinal decompression therapy is used to address a range of spinal conditions, including:
- Back or neck pain, sciatica, and related symptoms such as weakness or tingling that extends down the leg
- Bulging or herniated discs and degenerative disc disease
- Posterior facet syndrome (worn spinal joints)
- Injured or diseased spinal nerve roots
As the spinal decompression table applies gentle traction, it creates separation between the vertebrae, producing a vacuum effect inside the targeted discs.
This vacuum draws bulges or herniations back toward the interior of the disc, reducing pressure on surrounding nerve roots. The change that occurs in each session is gradual, but the cumulative effect over a course of treatment can be significant. The pumping action also draws nutrient-rich fluids into the disc from surrounding tissue — supporting the repair of torn or degenerated disc fibres.
Until recently, disc degeneration was widely considered irreversible. Clinical observations now show that discs can gain one to two millimetres of sustained height over a course of treatment. While this measurement is small, it can meaningfully reduce nerve compression and support improved function.
